With our adjacent proximity to the Fort Bragg Army installation, the defense industry is a natural fit.  As part of the All American Defense Corridor, Moore County is an excellent location for defense-related companies needing to be close to Fort Bragg.

Healthcare Industry
With healthcare facilities occupying 3 spots in the Top 10 list of Private Sector Employers in Moore County, it’s not surprising that Healthcare is our largest industry sector.  FirstHealth of the Carolinas is the County’s largest employer.


Tourism / Hospitality Industry
Tourism is our 2nd largest private industry sector and is a major contributor to Moore County’s economy.  According to the Tourism Division of the NC Department of Commerce, Moore County ranked 11th out of North Carolina‚Äôs 100 counties in total travel expenditures for 2015.  Domestic tourism revenues for Moore County in 2015 totaled $441.84 million, up .67% from 2014.  More than 5,450 jobs were directly attributable to travel and tourism.  Leaders here are committed to preserving those special qualities that make Moore County a desirable tourist destination.

Equine Industry
While the golfing and resort industries are substantial sources of local revenue, Moore County also has a thriving equine industry.  The N.C. Rural Center recently released the findings of a 2008 study on the economic impact of North Carolina’s Equine Industry.  Moore County has the 8th largest inventory of horses out of the state’s 100 counties.  There are 7,920 horses of all breeds at a value of $48,144,000 in the County.

The Town of Southern Pines is nationally recognized for its equestrian activity, not only supporting breeders, trainers, farriers, stables and many others in the industry, but also attracting both riders and spectators to the area to enjoy a variety of races and other competitions.


Retail Trade
Retail Trade is our 3rd largest private industry sector based on the number of workers employed.  Moore County’s retail base continues to expand in response to tourist traffic and the needs of residents.

Manufacturing is the 5th largest private industry sector in Moore County based on the number of workers employed.  In 2016, this sector employed 1,805 workers.
